So, of course, I am deeply troubled that we have just elected a president who most people know best from reality TV.  What does that say about our voting public?

Having said that, this election IS what our founding fathers had in mind when they drafted our constitution (but maybe not exactly) . This election was pure American democracy the way it was intended; one candidate found a better way to to speak to the hearts of the voters and they responded by putting him office.  While I don’t agree with the results, that is the beauty of democracy …

Which brings me to the lyric (actually three) … these are from a familiar source and seem apropos for what I stated above.  They songs are about war, not elections, but they seemed to fit what I was feeling – society (speaking of course in generalities) can’t be trusted to make informed, intelligent, well thought through decisions for themselves. We are an information based society where many of the sources go unchecked while putting truth and accuracy second chair to showmanship and style. Our society doesn’t possess the necessary skills to make an informed decision because the general population can’t wade through the confetti of news.  We mindlessly follow what we read or hear with no attempt to understand the truth behind the conjecture.  Baaaaa …

And that of course is why democracy is so beautiful;  the self righteousness assholes (like me, of course) don’t get to decide for the masses who will represent them – that is up to the sheep.  The democratic belief is that the collective intelligence is better than the selective …

Who’s right?

The monkey sat on a pile of stones
And stared at the broken bone in his hand
And the stains of a Viennese quartet
Rang out across the land
The monkey looked up at the stars
And thought to himself
Memory is a stranger
History is for fools
And he cleaned his hands
In a pool of holy writing
Turned his back on the garden
And set out for the nearest town
Hold on hold on soldier
When you add it all up
The tears and the marrowbone
There’s an ounce of gold
And an ounce of pride in each ledger
And the Germans killed the Jews
And the Jews killed the Arabs
And the Arabs killed the hostages
And that is the news
And is it any wonder
That the monkey’s confused
He said Mama Mama
The President’s a fool
Why do I have to keep reading
These technical manuals
And the joint chiefs of staff
And the brokers on Wall Street said
Don’t make us laugh
You’re a smart kid
Time is linear
Memory is a stranger
History is for fools
Man is a tool in the hands
Of the great God Almighty
And they gave him command
Of a nuclear submarine
And sent him back in search of
The Garden of Eden

What God Wants (Part II) – Roger Waters (1992)

Doctor Doctor what is wrong with me
This supermarket life is getting long
What is the heart life of a colour TV
What is the shelf life of a teenage queen
Ooh western woman
Ooh western girl
News hound sniffs the air
When Jessica Hahn goes down
He latches on to that symbol
Of detachment
Attracted by the peeling away of feeling
The celebrity of the abused shell the belle
Ooh western woman
Ooh western girl
And the children of Melrose
Strut their stuff
Is absolute zero cold enough
And out in the valley warm and clean
The little ones sit by their TV screens
No thoughts to think
No tears to cry
All sucked dry
Down to the very last breath
Bartender what is wrong with me
Why I am so out of breath
The captain said excuse me ma’am
This species has amused itself to death
Amused itself to death
Amused itself to death
We watched the tragedy unfold
We did as we were told
We bought and sold
It was the greatest show on earth
But then it was over
We oohed and aahed
We drove our racing cars
We ate our last few jars of caviar
And somewhere out there in the stars
A keen-eyed look-out
Spied a flickering light
Our last hurrah
And when they found our shadows
Groups ’round the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data in their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry
No feelings left
This species has amused itself to death
Amused itself to death
