Trying to rebuild a story when time has distorted memories like acetate in the sun can be difficult because the pieces never fit together like they did when they were originally formed.

The memory of my second exposure to this band (the first was a1993 MTV video full of pink hair and sexually filled lyrics that really wasn’t my tie dye thing) has changed over the years.  My rememberance is sitting in my office reading an article on CNN.com about how the bands evolution had culminated in this progressive punk set of songs that was pushing all the envelopes.  It lead me to their website and what I heard, blew me away.

But, the dates in my head don’t add up with the research I did to connect the dots.  The album was released years before I sat in the office of my memory.  The story was written well before I ever occupied that chair.  The memories have been warped with the passage time and the false visualizations that occupy my mind but, the results are  the same.

This bands growth from punk band to psychedelic maverick was perfectly captured in only a few albums for me. This tune is from the second album in that period that I still regularly listen to.  Anything earlier is too punk; anything after the next is very difficult to understand.  Someday, I’m sure, people will look back and say they were way ahead of their time; it’s bands like this that push music to new heights through their exploration of sonic boundaries.

Enjoy a simple yet contemplative tune …

Do You Realize – that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize – we’re floating in space –
Do You Realize – that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize – that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes – let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It’s hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn’t go down
It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize – Oh – Oh – Oh
Do You Realize – that everyone you know
Someday will die –

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes – let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It’s hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn’t go down
It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize – that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize

Do You Realize? – The Flaming Lips
